FM Northwave, Hokkaido Japan Upgrade to SystemBase C530ip
FM NorthWave, a prefecture-wide FM radio station, having a total of 5 transmission sites, have upgraded their STL to use the latest C530ip AoIP audio Codec from Systembase.
The original STL had been using NXL256 Codecs for many years. During this time, the data connectivity between the main studio and the transmitter site had been upgraded multiple times. Originally 256kbps fractional T1, then to 128kbps x 2 bonded leased line and finally to a solution that provided TDM transported over a IP which in turn was running across ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode).
Having successfully managed the upgrade of their 3rd generation STL to a ATM based system, FM North Wave selected Maple Audio Technology Corp (MAT) to design and commission a new 4th generation solution using a pure IP infrastructure and Systembase IP audio Codecs.
Mr. Morimoto, Technical Director of FM Northwave, commented “We were strongly recommended to use Systembase IP audio Codecs based on the fact that many European critical transmissions are using Systembase equipment. We trusted MAT’s recommendation, and as MAT did a excellent job designing the IP based STL infrastructure it was quite easy for us to upgrade. It was virtually plug-and-done”
Shotaro Umezawa, a president and IP audio specialist of MAT said “Moving to IP seems so easy on paper, but it isn’t that easy. Knowing what you are doing step-by-step, choosing right network switches and port speed configurations are all vital to making the entire system work reliably 24/7. In the past FM Northwave have had some serious reliability issues with other brands of audio Codecs so it was very important for them to work with a specialist like MAT who could deliver a fully tested system that just works…”
MAT was recently appointed as the Systembase Japanese representative in March 2016 to provide greater exposure of Systembase AoIP Codec products in the Japanese radio and television market. Andrew Steward, managing director of Systembase said “It was important for Systembase to join forces with a IT specialist, like MAT, who has the technical knowledge required to engineer and build reliable, stable, audio links in the Japanese radio and TV station market.”
BT Upgrade with C510ip IP Audio Codecs
BT Media & Broadcast, BT Group's international media services enterprise business, has recently expanded their IP Audio capability by purchasing Systembase C510ip audio codecs for installation in their fleet of UHD and HD outside broadcast (OB) trucks. The new codecs will allow BT Media & Broadcast to offer real-time audio delivery over IP networks whilst maintaining backward compatibility with their extensive network of C310xr ISDN audio codecs.
By switching to the Systembase C510ip it is now possible to stream audio and video services through the same IP connection using virtual private networks, VPN's, to allocate a fixed amount of IP bandwidth to each service. In particular, the use of IP technology for delivering audio will reduce reliance on the availability of temporary ISDN installations at OB locations. Additionally, IP offers greater flexibility than ISDN, by allowing dynamic simulcast broadcast of an audio feed to multiple clients from a single IP connection.
Neil Huggins, Head of Occasional Use Services at BT Media & Broadcast has commented;
“BT Media & Broadcast has always been at the cutting edge of service delivery. The deployment of the new Systembase C510ip codecs across our national fleet of OB vehicles will give us the ability to deliver IP comms as well as traditional ISDN comms on all of our outside broadcasts. This upgrade is part of a major refit of the TV outside broadcast network, trucks and infrastructure. We look forward to seeing the benefits of delivering enhanced services to our customers.”

BT Select Systembase IP audio codecs for UHD OB Truck
BT have selected Systembase C510ip audio codecs, supporting both IP and ISDN interfaces, for installation in their new fleet of 4K Ultra HD Outside broadcast trucks. The new truck which is the first of it's kind in Europe, was built by MegaHertz Broadcast Systems (MHz) and was displayed at the recent IBC 2014 Exhibition in Amsterdam.
The eight C510ip codec units will be used to broadcast real-time audio over IP and ISDN talk-back circuits for live sports coverage for a number of broadcasters including BT Sport, Sky Sports and ITV Sport.
Systembase originally started supplying ISDN codecs to BT Broadcast in 1994, and the successful relationship has continued for over 20 years.
London 2015 Firework Extravaganza
Systembase supplied 26 C510ip audio codecs to Delta Sound to broadcast multiple IP audio streams to various locations around central London for the 2015 new year firework extravaganza.
low delay Linear IP audio was streamed using a mixture of 5HGz microwave and fixed lines. Each Audio codec was enabled with FEC (forward error control) that was capable of replicating 1 lost packet in every 4 received. The FEC feature was particularly effective over the 5GHz microwave links, where WIFI interference from large numbers of mobile phones is always an issue.
An important feature for this event was the ability of C510ip codec to ensure that each ip codec link had a fixed audio to audio delay of only 13ms. This delay would remain constant even if the audio codec links were disrupted or the equipment power cycled.
Delta Sound were the first customer to extensively use the new EasyMON, broadacst Codec Monitor Tool, which allows a single browser window to simultaneously monitor the status of all 26 codecs in a tiled formatted display.
BT Sports Select Systembase C510ip IP codec
Over 60 Systembase C510ip IP audio codecs (AoIP + ISDN) were recently supplied to BT Sports and Megahertz Broadcast for the new UK TV channel which was launched in August 2013. BT Sports studios are located at the new iCITY digital studios in London, which is the former Olympic International Broadcast Center at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
BT Sports have successfully been using the C510ip (AoIP + ISDN) IP codec to stream high quality audio circuits over, BT provisioned, VPN IP networks between their iCITY studios and Outside Broadcast vehicles located at various sports stadiums. The C510ip IP codecs have proved to be very reliable in providing the live commentary and 4 wire production communications circuits required, with the C510ip's ISDN connectivity being useful when IP is not available. In Addition, the codec SNMP management feature is fully integrated into the iCity BNCS management system, giving full remote control of the codecs ISDN and IP (AoIP) features.
ITV Sport, Brazil 2014
Systembase C510ip IP (AoIP) Audio Codec's have been supplied to ITV and several other international television broadcasters for use during the 2014 World Cup football tournament, taking place at various stadiums in Brazil. The C510ip IP (AoIP) Codec's are being used to stream real-time audio communications and talk-back between the ITV studios in London and the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) which is located in Rio de Janeiro's Riocentro, Latin America's largest conference facility.
"ITV Sport have had a long and successful relationship with Systembase and, once again, we have been very pleased with the performance of their apt-X Audio Codec's as the audio quality and reliability are second to none. For the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, we are using the C510ip Codec's for streaming IP (AoIP) based international communications and music circuits via fibre. We have also configured the system to use the built in ISDN capability of the C510IP codec's to provide automatic fail-safe backup of the IP (AoIP) over ISDN."
Roger Pearce, Technical Director, ITV Sport
Globecast use C510ip over iDirect
Globecast are successfully using the latest C510ip audio codecs to deliver production audio over a combination of iDirect based satellite services and public IP networks. The ability to bridge the audio IP stream directly from iDirect onto the public internet (ADSL) has greatly simplified the delivery process by avoiding the cost of installing dedicated IP services at the customer premises. Based upon the success of this service, many broadcasters are now enabling static IP address to allow direct streaming of Systembase formatted IP audio into their premises from the public internet. The security implications associated with providing a public IP address are minimal as the C510ip provides IP audio and WEB management connectivity on separate RJ45 connectors, ensuring total isolation between public and internal networks at all times.
